About the Crankshaft Pulley
The crankshaft pulley, most commonly known as the harmonic balancer, is connected to the crankshaft to reduce torsional vibration, which is the angular vibration of an object, and pulls the drive belts. The firing of the cylinders causes superfluous resonance. This resonance causes the crankshaft to deflect from its proper rotation. The crankshaft pulley helps harmonize its gyration, hence the term "harmonic balancer."
