About the Engine Pistons
The pistons are connected directly to the crank. However, "piston" is a general term for its constituent parts, which are the piston head, piston rings, and the connecting rod (con rod). The piston rings are comprised of an oil control ring and two compression rings, which fit into a groove on top of the piston head. Together they form an air-tight seal within the confinement of the cylinder. The head connects with the con rod, thus forming what is recognized as a whole piston; and the con rod is connected to the crankshaft by a big end bearing, and shell. The purpose of the piston is to ascend up into the cylinder and compress the newly fuel-injected air against the cylinder head until combustion. The force of the combustion pushes the piston down and the crank gyrates it back around again; on it goes like so.
